Ed Dougert

Welcome to The Black Land.

Since 1999 I have been photographing the remnants of the Anthracite, or hard coal, industry of Northeastern Pennsylvania. For nearly one hundred years the mining of anthracite dominated all aspects of life in this area. Although the industry declined in the 1930’s and 40’s, the physical, social, and environmental consequences reverberate to the present day. My project is to complete a portrait of this area stressing the transformation of the land by the mining companies.

Although born in Philadelphia, I spent much of my time around my family’s hometown of Shenandoah, PA, the heart of the coal country, When I grew up. I earned degrees in Liberal Arts and Mechanical Engineering from Temple University and currently work as an engineer in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

I have previously published photographs in various magazines.
My book The Black Land was published by Schuylkill Living Press in 2002.
